The Better Nigeria Movement, a pro-democracy group, has urged House of Representatives lawmakers to select capable 10th National Assembly leaders.

The group’s convener, Saliu Bako, issued a statement in Abuja on Friday urging All Progressives Congress lawmakers to elect a “loyal and competent” party man as Speaker of the House because the President cannot afford a power-drunk politician.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to democracy in all government branches in a Thursday night meeting with all aspirants. The President reiterated the need to rally around Senator Akpabio for the Senate presidency to balance the religious bias of the top three executives not being Muslims, and he clearly stated that members-elect should choose a competent Speaker.

Mr. President is Democrat. He wants the house to elect leaders. Some dropping his name to impose a leader on the house upsets him.”

The group also urged lawmakers to elect a competent and loyal party member as Speaker.

“The House is an institution with 360 members,” he said. Mr. President needs a party leader to run the House. Mr. President cannot afford a power-drunk politician’s stooge.

“In April, some individuals purportedly selected Kaduna State’s Tajudeen Abass as the party’s House Speaker candidate. Some lawmakers-elect argued that they were not consulted before the selection, forming a larger majority of other candidates.

“However, we are supporting Aminu Jaji, a loyal ally of President Tinubu, as the front-runner. He has refused to step down from the race for Speaker of the House of Representatives.
