Breaking: DSS nabs Emefiele
Godwin Emefiele, who was suspended as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has been taken into custody, according to the Department of State Services, which made the announcement.
On Saturday, June 10, 2023, this information was shared in a statement that was posted to the agency’s Twitter handle.
The following is an excerpt from the statement: “The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria is now in its custody for some investigative reasons.”
“The general public, and the media in particular, is urged to exercise the utmost caution in the reportage and narratives concerning this,” the statement read.
On Friday night, President Bola Tinubu reportedly removed Emefiele from his position with immediate effect. The suspension was reportedly effective.
After being placed on administrative leave, Emefiele was given instructions to immediately turn over the running of his office to Adebisi Shonubi, the Deputy Governor of the Operations Directorate. Adebisi Shonubi will assume the role of governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) until the results of the investigation and the reforms have been determined.
Late on Friday, unconfirmed reports began circulating that agents working for the Department of State Services had detained the governor of the CBN who had been suspended.
On the other hand, Peter Afunaya, the spokesman for the DSS, has now confirmed that the governor of the CBN who was suspended is currently in its custody.
