Aminu Jaji, a candidate for speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, has stated that he will make sure the House is not referred to as a “rubber stamp” if elected.
The lawmaker added that he would make sure that the country’s interests were served by the legislative and executive branches of government cooperating harmoniously.
Jaji made these commitments in a meeting with lawmakers on Friday, according to a statement made available to our correspondent on Saturday in Abuja.
Jaji mentioned that he was still running when speaking to the House of Representatives’ newly elected members.
If given the opportunity to lead the 360-member lower chamber, the Speaker candidate stated his desire to lead an inclusive legislature.
“I am running for the position because I want the 10th Assembly to be independent,” Jaji declared. I called my campaign a unity project because it has a single goal and is run independently, free from outside influence.
“It is unfortunate that some candidates for office are acting under the influence of someone. It is a sad reality that we must allow outside factors to determine who will lead us.
“In order to promote national unity, the National Assembly cannot act as a rubber stamp. In order to bring peace to the nation, my leadership will cooperate with the executive rather than provoke them.
“Since all of the members are qualified and qualified to serve in the National Assembly, they must be permitted to elect their own leaders. Let’s cooperate and elect a leader with whom we can share the rewards rather than one who will be given the list of who should receive or speak at plenary. Nobody can claim they donated money to my project—the only one—in order to receive any benefits.
According to the statement, at least 150 members of the incoming House of Representatives were present.
