Nyesom Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, has provided an explanation of why he backed Godswill Akpabio in his bid to become the 10th Senate President of the National Assembly.
Wike called Akpabio a devoted supporter who contributed N200 million to the advancement of his campaign in 2014 and 2015. He described Akpabio as a longtime ally.
He revealed this on Sunday during a special thanksgiving service that his family had organized at the St. Peters Deanery in Rumuepirikom, a region of the state called Obio-Akpor.
Although he received harsh criticism, the former governor of Rivers claimed that Akpabio supported his desire to take office as governor in 2015.
“He came out and supported me when I ran in 2014 and 2015. For that election, he gave me 200 million Naira.
“For this reason, I asserted that one good deed merits another. This time, I helped him, and I’m grateful that he prevailed,” he said.
To counter Wike’s assertion, Akpabio stated that the N200 million he gave to Wike in 2015 did not come from the funds of Akwa Ibom, the state he was governor of at the time.
The Senate President mentioned that the funds came from savings made while working in the telecom industry as a managing director before being elected governor.
