Although May 1st is widely recognized as a pleasant day for workers, the Kano State Water Board workers’ union has described the day as one of melancholy for its members as the globe celebrates International Workers’ Day.
This is because the state government hasn’t started paying them the new ₦71,000 minimum salary.
Comrade Najib Abdulsalam, the union’s head, stated this in an interview with Dala FM on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
“The Kano Water Board is going through a difficult time. In order for us to have the same happiness as other employees, we urge Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to include us in the new pay system,” he stated.
Nearly six months after the ₦71,000 wage was announced, Comrade Najib claims that despite prior complaints regarding their absence from the new minimum wage, there has been no response.

“We believe that those who counsel the governor on social media issues are not being honest with him about the Water Board’s operations, which is why our demands have yet to be fulfilled,” he continued.
Although the board has stated that attempts are being taken to address the issue, it should be noted that Water Board employees have been complaining about the failure to implement the new salary structure and other issues for a while.
Some individuals believe that the Water Board’s poor treatment of its employees is the reason behind Kano’s acute tap water shortage.
