In other news, seasoned Nigerian music executive and record producer ID Cabasa has said that Senegalese-American musician and executive Akon’s assertions that he helped create the Afrobeats genre are based on opinions he received from those around him.
According to reports, Akon stated in a recent interview that the current genre of Afrobeats originated from his partnerships and collaborations with Nigerian musicians and music executives between the late 2000s and the 2010s.
In an interview with Wazobia FM, ID Cabasa asserted that Akon is not entitled to claim credit for the creation of Afrobeats.
He acknowledged that throughout the late 2000s to early 2010s, when Afrobeats had not yet achieved widespread recognition in the West, Akon worked and cooperated with a few Nigerian musicians and music executives, but this does not absolve him of responsibility for its inception.
He emphasized that even before Akon traveled to Nigeria to work with Wizkid, P-Square, and other Afrobeat musicians, performers like Timaya, 9ice, and 2Face had already achieved fame.
Banky W found Wizkid’s talent and signed him to his record label, Empire Mates Entertainment, which later partnered with Akon’s label. The record producer also refuted Akon’s assertion that Wizkid was merely a local musician prior to being signed to his label in 2008 and being groomed.
