On Sunday, May 11, the 27-year-old suffered the severe injury while playing in the Premier League against Leicester City. Awoniyi was trying to get to a cross when he struck the goalpost. He first kept playing despite the severe hit, but as his health worsened, he was replaced.
Surgery was performed right away after medical scans showed a perforated intestine. In order to stabilize his heart rate and aid in his recuperation, Awoniyi was put in an induced coma in between the two surgeries, which were performed on Monday and Wednesday.

Awoniyi has been roused from the coma as of Wednesday, May 14, and is reportedly making a full recovery.
Nottingham Forest has decided to conduct an internal review into how the issue was handled, namely the choice to let Awoniyi play on after the collision. On the field, club owner Evangelos Marinakis allegedly confronted manager Nuno Espírito Santo, asking for clarification over the medical staff’s reaction.
Awoniyi’s health is no longer life-threatening, but how well he recovers will determine when he can return to football. The team is hopeful that he will fully heal, but they have not yet set a timetable for his return.
