The passing of Arise News presenter Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu has been mourned by former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
According to reports, Sommie, as she is affectionately known, unfortunately died early on Monday, September 29, 2025, after being robbed at her home in the Katampe neighborhood of Abuja.
Peter Obi emphasized in a statement via đť•Ź that the tragic event underscores the pressing necessity for the nation to put every citizen’s safety and security first.
“May you rest in peace,” he wrote. Somtochukwu Emmanuel Maduagwu.
“Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a talented young anchor with Arise News, passed away tragically and too soon during a robbery incident in Abuja. Her death was caused by extremely difficult circumstances.
At just 29, Somtochukwu had already made a name for herself as a talented broadcaster and accomplished attorney whose voice inspired, educated, and engaged a large audience. In addition to being a personal tragedy for her family and coworkers, her passing is a severe setback to journalism and our country, which is still losing its best members due to violence and instability.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of how vital it is that our nation put every citizen’s protection and security first. No Nigerian should lose their life in such needless ways or go to bed afraid of what the night may bring.
“Her bereaved family, the Arise News family, and everyone else who is grieving her are in my prayers and thoughts. May her soul rest in peace and may we as a nation strive to create a nation that values and protects life.
Atiku also offered his sympathies to the Arise News management and the deceased’s family.
“My sincere condolences to the family of Ms. Somtochukwu Maduagwu, an Arise TV newscaster who was killed in an armed robbery attack in Abuja,” he said. My sympathies are also with @ARISEtv’s management and employees. I pray that this loss at such a young age may provide solace to the family, friends, and coworkers.
