Debo Olugunagba, the national publicity secretary for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has justified his recent comments against former President Goodluck Jonathan, claiming that they were misunderstood.

Olugunagba made this statement on Friday while answering questions on Arise Television’s Morning Show.

According to him, the PDP constitution permits any member who is in good standing to run for any office, including president.

Remember how Professor Jerry Gana, the former Minister of Information and Orientation, revealed that Jonathan would run for office again in 2027?

He claims that Jonathan will run as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate in the upcoming election.

Olugunagba pointed out that although the party has designated the South as the zone for the 2027 presidential ticket, no decision has been made to limit the competition to governors.

He made it clear that he was not speaking for the party when it came to selecting its final presidential candidate, but that all members who fit the criteria are still able to run.

“The background to your question,” Olugunagba stated. Let me clarify, however, the remarks you made about Professor Jerry Ghana. I appreciate that you expressed his viewpoint. Naturally, he is also entitled to his He is a founding parent and a former official of this party. Naturally, we respect his opinion. That is democracy’s beauty.

“We are allowed to voice our ideas under the PDP. And it still is, of course. The decision will be notified once the party has made a decision.

“Allow me to introduce a hypothesis. Party members have misconceptions, and Nigerians, of course, occasionally attempt to mislead. We adhere strictly to the constitution that governs the Peoples Democratic Party. Under the party’s program, anyone can now strive to be anything, including the president. Interestingly, the party has positioned it to the south.

“The party includes President Goodluck Jonathan. He hasn’t stated that he isn’t a member, so if he is in good standing with the party—and I don’t have any reason to think he isn’t—he is free to aim for any position.

“I stated that, notwithstanding the name of President Jonathan that is being mentioned and circulated, there are numerous highly qualified individuals in the PDP’s ranks among its members and governors, many of whom have proven their abilities through their accomplishments and performances.

Thus, that is the most obvious argument that needs to be presented. I wasn’t representing the party. Although the party has decided that the presidential candidate would be chosen from among the governors, if this is the case, the candidates are obviously qualified and well qualified.
