After sustaining a broken neck in a terrible on-field incident during a Chinese League One game over the weekend, Togolese international Samuel Asamoah faces a lengthy recuperation period.
Guangxi Pingguo midfielder Samuel Asamoah, 31, was taken to the hospital after colliding head-first with an LED billboard during Sunday’s match. Zhang Zhixiong of Chongqing Tonglianglong, an opponent who was merely given a yellow card for the incident, shoved him, causing the hit.
Guangxi Pingguo revealed on Monday that Asamoah suffered serious nerve damage and several neck fractures, putting him at risk for what medical professionals called “high-level paraplegia.” The phrase describes a loss of sensation and mobility in the lower body.
The team confirmed in a statement that the midfield player is presently stable after undergoing surgery. Guangxi Pingguo continued, “His recuperation progress will be announced in due course after follow-up examinations.”

Before relocating to China in 2024, Asamoah spent over ten years in Belgium, where he started his professional career. Since making his debut in 2019, he has made six appearances for the Togo national team.
