Ezenwa Nwagwu, a supporter of democratic reforms and public accountability, has asked Prof. Joash Ojo-Amupitan, the recently nominated head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to handle a variety of interests and fend off political pressure in order to regain trust.
When Nwagwu was interviewed on Arise Television on Thursday, he made the call.
Additionally, he asked the Nigerian Senate to thoroughly and transparently screen Prof. Amupitan, emphasizing that the public’s confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system can only be restored by strong, independent, and competent leadership.
“The nominee must first be profiled by the secret police before being submitted to the Council of State, even though the president has already made the nomination.
“There needs to be greater transparency in that oversight process. I fear that we will only ever hear that the Council of State gave its unanimous approval. Knowing if there were votes or opposing viewpoints would have been preferable, he stated.
He asserts that rather than merely approving the nomination, the Senate committees on intelligence, electoral concerns, and anti-corruption must actively engage with him.
