The decision to examine President Bola Tinubu’s presidential pardon was a last-ditch effort by the administration, according to Paul Ibe, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s media adviser.
The Minister of Justice and the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation reportedly stated on Thursday that no prisoner who was granted mercy under the most recent exercise had been released from imprisonment, stating that the procedure was subject to revision.
On Thursday, the AGF Office said in a statement personally signed by Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, that the process was still in its final administrative stage. This stage includes a standard review to make sure that all names and recommendations fully comply with established legal and procedural requirements before any instrument of release is issued.
According to Fagbemi, the verification procedure was a regular procedure that demonstrated the government’s dedication to openness and due diligence.
In response, Ibe wrote on 𝕏 that the harm was already done, emphasizing that “no amount of bureaucratic grammar can erase the moral recklessness of extending mercy to those who have violated the nation’s laws and conscience.”
He went on to say, “This so-called clarification is just a last-ditch effort.
After approving clemency for convicted criminals in a hurry, the administration is now feigning “a review.” Already, the harm has been done.
