At least 300 gymnasts are expected to compete in the Gymfest Gymnastics Championship’s second edition, which will take place in Lagos on November 1.
The eagerly awaited competition, which will include contestants ranging from pre-level 1 to level 7, is said to strive to encourage the future generation of gymnasts, some of whom are as young as three years old, and highlight Nigeria’s developing gymnastics ability.
The goal of this year’s competition, according to the organizers, is to provide young athletes with a platform to develop self-discipline, teamwork, and national solidarity.
In addition, the tournament will bring together administrators, parents, coaches, and sports fans to talk about how gymnastics may promote youth development and enhance Nigeria’s athletic culture.
Sarah Boulos, co-convener of the championship, spoke prior to the event and characterized Gymfest as a long-term initiative aimed at raising the bar for gymnastics in Nigeria.
“Gymfest is more than just a competition; it’s a movement to raise the bar for gymnastics in Nigeria and develop young athletes into elite athletes,” she stated.
Boulos emphasized that youth development and sustainability are the cornerstones of the effort.
“We want to create a long-lasting gymnastics path in Nigeria that builds self-esteem, promotes engagement, and develops the next generation of champions,” she continued.
Boulos emphasized that home support is essential to developing great athletes and advocated for increased parental involvement.
“We’re encouraging gymnastics and educating parents about how great it is as a starting point for all sports.” Children who participate in gymnastics develop critical social, mental, and physical abilities, she said.
Early involvement in the sport can help kids gain confidence, discipline, and agility that they can use in other aspects of their lives, she continued.
According to Yoyin Akpose, the event’s program director, Gymfest acts as a gathering place for all sports enthusiasts, including parents and professional coaches.
“To celebrate and promote the growth of gymnastics in Nigeria, Gymfest brings together parents, coaches, gymnastics enthusiasts, and supporters,” Akpose stated.
Beyond medals and trophies, she said, the competition is fostering a sense of community dedicated to seeing Nigeria succeed on the international gymnastics scene.
