Obi Aguocha, the member of the House of Representatives for the Ikwuano-Umuahia Federal Constituency of Abia State, has expressed surprise at the choice of Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to take over the defense of his own case in court.
According to reports, Kanu fired the attorneys who were representing him in open court on Thursday in response to the Federal Government’s terrorism allegations.
Speaking on Arise Television, Aguocha responded by saying he was shocked that Kanu took up the defense of his own case in court.
He asserted that the IPOB leader had a constitutional right to sufficient time to ensure he had a strong defense.
“Nnamdi Kanu spoke with the legal team yesterday,” Aguocha stated. Godwin Kanu Agabi, the former Attorney-General of the Federation, surprised us all by telling the court that he and the legal team—particularly those from the inner temple—were withdrawing.
The court was taken aback as well and questioned Nnamdi Kanu about it. He agreed that he would handle his defense for the time being. For the time being, he would handle his defense, but it doesn’t mean that attorneys won’t be involved if another occasion presents itself tomorrow. In court, that is what transpired.
The fact that Nnamdi Kanu took over the defense of his own case pleased me. We were all unaware of it, so I was simultaneously astonished and surprised. As usual, I attended the court hearings and all of stuff when I went to court.
“He is entitled by the constitution to sufficient time and facilities to guarantee a sufficient defense.”
