Nigeria’s status as a nation of particular concern due to alleged religious persecution has been rejected by President Bola Tinubu.
Nigeria was named a “country of particular concern” by Trump on Friday due to allegations of a genocide against Christians in Nigeria.
Tinubu, however, emphasized in a statement on Saturday that Nigeria is a democracy with constitutional protections for religious freedom.
“Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty,” the statement said.
“Since 2023, our administration has continued to address security issues that impact citizens of all faiths and geographical areas while maintaining an open and active engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders alike.”
“The portrayal of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not accurately represent our country’s reality or account for the government’s persistent and genuine efforts to protect everyone’s right to freedom of religion and beliefs.
“Tolerance and religious freedom have been and will continue to be fundamental components of our shared identity. Nigeria does not support or condone religious persecution.
Nigeria’s constitution guarantees the protection of its citizens of all faiths.
“Our administration is dedicated to strengthening understanding and collaboration on the protection of communities of all faiths in collaboration with the US government and the international community.”
