Lionel Messi’s return is “unrealistic,” according to FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta, who also announced plans to honor the Argentine superstar with a special memorial game.
The 37-year-old Lionel Messi shocked supporters last week by visiting the Nou Camp and declaring his desire to return “not just to say goodbye as a player.”
According to reports, Messi moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. He then joined Inter Miami in 2023, where he recently inked a contract that would last until 2028.
In an interview with Catalunya Radio, Laporta stated, “I think it is not appropriate for me to make speculation that is unrealistic, nor do I think it is fair.”
He acknowledged that the outcome of Messi’s departure from Barcelona did not meet his expectations. Messi’s contract could not be extended due to the club’s financial difficulties at the time, leaving both the player and the fans with unresolved issues.
Laporta is determined to give Messi the farewell he deserves, despite the likelihood that he will rejoin the team. After renovations are completed and the Nou Camp reopens, he plans to host a commemorative game.
“His tribute would be the greatest in the world, and it would be amazing to have it here, in front of 105,000 fans,” Laporta remarked.
