Ini Ememobong, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) recently elected National Publicity Secretary, called the violent standoff at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja “shameful and pitiful.”

Ememobong reportedly said this on Tuesday while answering questions during an interview on the “Politics Today” show on Channels Television.

He questioned the procedure leading up to the contentious meeting and claimed that the violent altercation shows a troubling deterioration in Nigeria’s democratic culture.

Ememobong emphasized that the incident put party members in risk and expressed regret that every election cycle in Nigeria is becoming worse.

The attorney accused the ruling party of fostering animosity toward the opposition, pointing out that a number of Nigerians have already perished from inhaling tear gas.

Is that a meeting of the NEC, he asked? INEC must keep an eye on every NEC meeting. The fact that this is still occurring after six election cycles is extremely regrettable and sad.

“There should be a strong strengthening of democracy. We should respect democratic principles. Our way of life ought to incorporate them. Unfortunately, it seems like every election cycle gets worse.

In a democracy, the minority will voice their opinions and the majority will have their way. Currently, however, a minority is attempting to force its will on the majority.
