Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin, yesterday urged the US government to provide Nigeria with equipment and technology so that the nation may effectively combat insecurity.
“I urge the American government to assist the Nigerian government with technology and equipment both software and hardware to defeat the monsters that make our lives nasty, brutish, and short,” as philosopher Thomas Hobbes would describe the “State of nature” that appears to be our lot at this critical time, Egbewole stated in response to a question from a reporter.
He proposed that a “Cobra Effect” may result from anything other than US government support, and that this should be avoided.
In order to address the issues of insecurity plaguing the nation, he emphasized the necessity for Nigerians to unite regardless of their political, religious, or ethnic background.
According to Egbewole, “the institution has made its mark within the past 50 years by recording a good number of firsts, including being consistently ranked as Nigeria’s best university and the first Nigerian university to be ranked among the best 20 in Africa.”
He emphasized that the university’s vision is in line with the “Strategic Plan of our Golden age” and urged all stakeholders to help it achieve its goals.
He said that the university would not stray from its fundamental principles of excellence, integrity, networking, justice, and teamwork (INJECT).
