Hours after the military took control of Guinea-Bissau, a top government official stated on Thursday that former president Goodluck Jonathan is safe in the country.
According to earlier reports, Jonathan is one of the prominent election observers and African leaders who are presently stuck in Guinea-Bissau following a coup d’état on Wednesday by military officers.
The source, who wished to remain anonymous, told Vanguard that diplomatic and evacuation measures have been initiated for Jonathan’s return to Nigeria.
The source said that Nigerian security officers are a member of a multinational task team that is currently in the nation to support Jonathan’s and other Nigerian officials on assignment’s safety.
According to the source, Nigeria is doing everything it can to guarantee their safety and make their homecoming easier.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier stated that the Federal Government denounced the coup and called for the return of constitutional governance.
Nigeria reaffirmed its opposition to an illegitimate change of government after the takeover and declared its support for Guinea-Bissau’s democratic institutions.
According to diplomatic channels, the nation is still dedicated to cooperating with regional allies to stabilize the situation and ensure the safety of foreign officials and observers who are ensnared by the uprising.
