-Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress, or ADC.
At the ADC office in Ungwar Sarki Ward, Kaduna State, the former governor finished his registration and obtained his membership card.
El-Rufai, a founding member of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), reportedly defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) earlier this year.Following his resignation from the APC on March 10, this action represents a major step in his political realignment. The former Federal Capital Territory Minister at the time stated in his resignation letter that he could no longer stay in a party that he felt had strayed from the ideals that had led to its founding.
It was noted that he had warned that the APC had grown insensitive to internal issues and no longer represented the progressive ideas it had once supported, accusing the party’s leadership of abandoning its original principles.
He claims that for two years, he consistently voiced concerns about what he saw as the party’s dangerous path both in public and behind closed doors, but his worries were consistently disregarded.
El-Rufai, a pivotal player in the 2013 opposition merger that gave rise to the APC, claimed the party had deviated significantly from its initial goals. He pointed out that recent events showed a lack of desire on the part of those in charge of the APC to recognize or deal with what he called the “unhealthy” internal environment of the party.
As political realignments continue ahead of next elections, his formal transfer to ADC heralds the beginning of his next chapter in politics and raises the party’s profile in Kaduna State and beyond.
Tu’e former governor said in his resignation letter from SDP, dated November 26, 2025, that his main goal is to help build a unified democratic platform that can provide Nigerians with a legitimate political choice.
He stated, “I would like to inform you that, as of November 26, 2025, I have resigned from the Social Democratic Party, SDP.”
