Sabinus Reveals Father Once Called Skit-Making ‘Stupid’, Regrets Funding His Education

Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, better known by his stage name Sabinus, has disclosed that his father was initially incensed about his choice to pursue a career in comedy.

In an interview with media personality VJ Adams, Sabinus reportedly said that, despite his father’s desire for him to become a lawyer, he ultimately chose to major in linguistics and communication studies after being turned down for entrance to law school.

While attending the University of Port Harcourt, Sabinus claimed to have discovered his comedic gift and started creating sketches.

The comedian claimed that his father regretted paying for his schooling after learning that he was a sketch maker and called the industry a foolish one.

After he began giving him money from the revenues of his comedies, Sabinus said, his father finally gave him his blessing.

“At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today; he wanted me to be a lawyer,” he stated. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to get admitted to law school. I was forced to enroll in Uniport’s Linguistics and Communication Studies program.

I decided to give skit-making a shot after seeing it on campus. There was no money coming in.

My dad was unaware that I was a comedian after I graduated since I kept it a secret. He continued to see me on advertisements for comedic shows for another year after school. He was informed by my sisters that I enjoyed humor. He was enraged. “Which comedy?” he yelled. A foolish enterprise. Take a look at the youngster I sent to study law.
