Juliet Igwe, a 38-year-old businesswoman, was detained by the Imo State Police Command for injuring her six-year-old female maid, Onyinyechi, in her private areas with candlelight.
The entrepreneur not only hurt the minor’s intimate areas but also peeled off the infant’s two hands with hot water and injured her body with candle wax.
Imo State Police spokesperson Henry Okoye, who paraded the suspect at the Command headquarters in Owerri, the state capital, revealed that the woman’s arrest was the result of information obtained by officers from the Ideato North police Divisional headquarters.
Additionally, he praised Chidiebube Okeoma, an activist journalist and founder of the Stand For Humanity Foundation, a human rights organization.
Okoye revealed that the suspect would face her day in court at the end of the investigation, calling the woman’s actions abhorrent and completely unacceptable.
He said that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigations Department had been instructed to look into the incident and charge the suspect in court by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, who is not pleased with the act.
Okoye also praised Okeoma and his charity for accepting accountability for the minor’s welfare and medical circumstances.
The suspect, who claimed to have caused the minor’s injuries, told reporters during an interview that she was unaware that using boiling water and candle wax on the young girl would seriously harm her.
The child was also accused by the suspects of stealing meat from her pot, claiming that she took this step to prevent it from happening again.
Speaking as well, Okeoma revealed that his charity notified the police of a child abuse incident in the Ideato North LGA’s Uruala locality.
Okeoma revealed that his organization helped the police in Ideato apprehend the perpetrator in addition to saving the girl and turning her over to the authorities.
“The minor’s welfare and medical packages are now under our control. He stated, “We have brought her to the Imo State University Medical Center in Owerri for appropriate medical examinations and treatments.”
Additionally, he praised Dr. Uche Ewelike, the Executive Secretary of the Imo State Health Insurance Agency, for authorizing the minor’s full, free medical care.
“When we contacted the state Commissioner of Police, he promptly ordered the transfer of the investigation to the state CID in Owerri, for which we are grateful. He remarked, “The CP has once again shown his love for justice and humanity.”
