A state of emergency has been declared throughout the region by the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS.

Omar Touray, the president of the ECOWAS Commission, made the announcement on Tuesday during the 55th ministerial meeting of the Mediation and Security Council in Abuja.

The meeting was called in reaction to several coups and failed uprisings that had affected the sub-region’s nations.

The events underscore the “imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community,” according to Touray.
