The Islamic State West Africa Province’s (ISWAP) recent threats against Christians in Nigeria have been denounced by former presidential advisor Bashir Ahmad, who claims that the group’s activities are not justified by Islam.
Using his official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account, Ahmad made the comments on Friday, separating the terrorist organization from Islamic principles and characterizing their campaign as a perversion of the faith.
Ahmad added, “The ISWAP terrorists are clearly not Muslims, and their actions in no way represent Islam or its teachings. They are threatening Christians to convert to Islam or face death.”
He emphasized that Islam prohibits coercion in questions of faith and reminded that the religion was propagated peacefully.
“Coercion, intimidation, or violence were never used to propagate Islam. The Qur’an makes it clear that religion is voluntary.
“Muslims and non-Muslims coexisted peacefully in Makkah and Madinah even during the time of our beloved Prophet (PBUH), bound by mutual respect, justice, and shared humanity,” he stated.
Ahmad characterized ISWAP’s violent acts and threats as a violation of both humanity and Islamic values.
“What these terrorists are doing is a total betrayal of Islam and a perversion of its principles. He continued, “Their renewed campaign of violence and intimidation is completely unacceptable and goes against both our religion and humanity.”
