Abba Kabir Yusuf, the governor of Kano State, has delayed his much-awaited switch from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor’s close friend informed Daily Post that the formal defection has been rescheduled from Monday, January 5, 2026, to Monday, January 12, 2026.
Governor Yusuf was reportedly prepared to formally join the APC on January 5. However, Yusuf asked for more time during a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja on Friday, according to a source close to the governor who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The source claims that before completing the defection, the governor wishes to speak with some of the state’s remaining lawmakers and other stakeholders who have not yet fully supported the suggested political action.
Reports about Yusuf’s intended defection from the NNPP to the APC have been circulating in Kano, an old city and a major center of northern Nigerian politics, in recent days.
In other news, Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, has responded to reports of internal defections from the party’s Kwankwasiyya movement.
Governor Abba Yusuf may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in early January 2026, according to rumors that the NNPP is currently experiencing an internal conflict centered on its stronghold in Kano State.
Johnson, however, stated that Yusuf has not disclosed his defection to the National Working Committee or the National Executive Committee during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today.”
The NNPP leader also denied rumors that Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has consented to the Kano people and Governor Yusuf joining the APC.
