During a long-running battle in the Yoruba film business, veteran comedy actor Yomi King, better known by his stage name Opebe, has revealed a startling incident about how he was allegedly battered on a film set for standing by his late colleague Baba Suwe.
A prepared fight scene unexpectedly became real during the making of the movie Eku Meji, according to Opebe, who recently discussed the incident in an interview on Behind the Fame.
He clarified that a miscommunication between Baba Suwe and fellow actress Yinka Quadri was the root of the conflict. He sided with Baba Suwe out of loyalty, but this decision later backfired.
“Those were actual beatings; they weren’t just acting.” That’s called acting, and in order for people to believe it actually happened, you have to do it properly and authentically,” Opebe stated.
The actor said that although Yinka Quadri was supposed to beat him during the filming of Eku Meji, the blows went beyond the call of duty.
“It was a slap and a serious pounding when we arrived at the set, and it was a beating role. I started to yell, “Cut!” This is no longer a film. “I was furious,” he continued.
Opebe, who started acting in 1979 and rose to fame with the TV show Erinkeke, is well-known for his comedic parts and his close relationship with the late Baba Suwe, with whom he appeared on television multiple times.
