The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has recorded a major political boost in Edo State following the defection of Hon. Murphy Omoruyi, the Member representing Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency, from the Labour Party to the ADC.
The official defection ceremony took place on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the ADC Edo State Party Office, in Benin City, drawing party leaders, stakeholders, supporters, civil society representatives, and members of the public from across Edo State and the wider South-South zone.
Hon. Omoruyi’s defection is widely regarded as a strategic development that further strengthens the ADC’s political presence in Edo State and reinforces its growing reputation as a credible platform for progressive politics, inclusive governance, and people-centred leadership.
Welcoming the federal lawmaker, Edo State Chairman of the ADC, Hon. Kennedy Odion, described the defection as a strong endorsement of the party’s vision and values.
“On behalf of the leadership, executives, and members of the African Democratic Congress in Edo State, I warmly welcome Hon. Murphy Omoruyi into our great party,” Odion said.
“His defection clearly demonstrates the confidence Nigerians are beginning to repose in the ADC as a true party of the people. We are confident that his experience and commitment to grassroots development will further strengthen our party and positively impact the lives of Edo people.”
Also speaking at the event, H.E. John Odigie Oyegun, ADC Edo National Leader, described the defection as a defining moment for the party’s growth in Edo State.
“The decision of Hon. Murphy Omoruyi to align with the ADC is not accidental; it is the outcome of a clear search for a party rooted in principle, discipline, and genuine service to the people,” Oyegun said. “ADC is steadily becoming the political home for leaders who place the interest of the people above personal ambition. His entry strengthens our resolve to build a formidable, people-driven political movement in Edo State and Nigeria.”
Former Senate President, Sen. Roland Owie, hailed the defection as proof that the ADC is emerging as a serious alternative platform for national rebirth.
“When leaders of substance begin to move in a particular direction, it signals a shift in the political tide,” Owie stated. “Hon. Omoruyi’s defection confirms that ADC represents the future of purposeful politics. Edo State stands to benefit immensely from this convergence of progressive minds committed to justice, equity, and development.”
In his remarks, Sen. Yisa Braimoh emphasised the strategic importance of the defection for grassroots mobilisation and legislative effectiveness.
“This is more than a defection; it is a statement of belief in a new political culture,” Braimoh noted. “Hon. Omoruyi brings energy, credibility, and a strong grassroots connection that will deepen the ADC’s reach across Edo Central and beyond. Also welcoming the lawmaker, Sen. Ehigie Uzamere described the development as a boost to the party’s reform-driven agenda.

The ADC South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary, and a member of the Edo state leadership team, Mabel Oboh described the defection as a significant milestone for the party in the region.

Adding her voice, Dr Mrs. Elizabeth Edomwandagbon, one of the women leaders of the party in Edo State praised the inclusiveness and ideological clarity of the ADC.
