The Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, has bemoaned the Federal Government’s “selective implementation” of their accord.
Following its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at Taraba State University in Jalingo, the union made the statement, which was released by its president, Professor Christopher Piwuna.
ASUU strongly cautioned that further government hesitation might have “serious consequences on the education sector” while voicing concerns about the FG’s purportedly back-and-forth attitude to talks with union executives.
The organization also cautioned that if the Federal Government does not uphold its commitments, it may be subject to another round of widespread strike action.
The union stated, “We, therefore, hope that our expectations for a prompt and comprehensive resolution, as well as those of Nigerians, are not dashed.”
The university instructors also accused government representatives of misrepresenting information and obstructing the bargaining process.
According to ASUU, “the release of third-party deductions and the partial payment of promotion arrears, which date back to 2017, were described as confidence-boosting exercises rather than solutions to the core issues.”
According to reports, while there has been progress in many non-financial parts of the union-FG deal, university instructors have complained that their pay and working conditions have not received enough attention.
