The two-week warning strike was suspended by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the union has explained why.
According to ASUU, the federal government should be given a month to complete the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement renegotiation and resolve any other unresolved concerns impacting the university system.
On behalf of the varsity employees, ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna reportedly announced the suspension during a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to Piwuna, ASUU’s successful interactions with the Nigerian government and the National Assembly’s efforts led to the decision.
Remember that Tuesday’s meeting of the ASUU national leadership was intended to assess the organization’s stance on the current member strike.
According to Piwuna, the union announced the warning strike on October 13, 2025, because the government had not responded to several requests to settle the ongoing renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and other welfare-related issues.
The president of ASUU also alluded to the government’s efforts to re-engage the union through a group headed by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed.
Even though not all the problems were fixed, he said that there was a noticeable improvement over the pre-strike state of affairs.
The Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, Labour, and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, were also praised by Piwuna for their work in promoting communication between the two parties.
