The contentious renaming of a well-known bus stop in Lagos after veteran Nigerian comedian Charles Oputa, better known by his stage name Charly Boy, has been characterized as a distraction.
According to reports, the Bariga Local Council Development Area recently honored the well-known rapper and music entrepreneur by replacing the “Charly Boy Bus Stop” with the “Olamide Badoo Bus Stop.”
Since then, many Nigerians and political elites have expressed outrage over the incident.
The political activist, however, criticized the action as politically driven and a diversion from Nigeria’s urgent problems in an interview on Tuesday on ARISE Television.

“This is more of a diversion,” he remarked. We aren’t dealing with the issues that we ought to in these modern times. The 2027 race is already underway, whether you like it or not.
Because of Oputa’s close ties to the Bariga and Gbagada communities, where he lived and conducted philanthropic work from 1989 to 2006, the name Charlie Boy Bus Stop has been in use for decades. By giving motorcycles to Okada riders, offering scholarships, and helping senior pensioners, he garnered a lot of sympathy from the general public and was given the honor of being named.
“Because I lived at the bus stop, they started calling it Charlie Boy Bus Stop, and it gained popularity.”
Charley Boy also questioned why politicians try to create political and ethnic divisions among Nigerians.
“Why do they try to set us against each other whenever politics is involved?” he said. since we allowed them to harm us in that way. How is it possible for the worst of us to guide the best?
