The Federal College of Education (FCE), Abeokuta, has conferred the Award of Excellence in Leadership and Global Human Capacity Development on renowned education innovator and global development advocate, Dr. Idonuagbe Akogun.
The prestigious award was presented during the opening ceremony of the School of Early Childhood Care, Primary, Adult and Non-formal Education (SECPANE) Biennial Conference held at the Kunle Filani Lecture Theatre within the college premises.
Dr. Akogun, who was unavoidably absent, was ably represented at the event by Mr. Olaide S. Abiola, who received the award on his behalf to the admiration of participants, scholars, and dignitaries in attendance.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the reading of Dr. Akogun’s detailed bio-sketch, which drew applause and admiration from the audience. The citation captured his remarkable journey as a Nigerian-American visionary leader, widely known as “The Prof,” whose work has significantly transformed education through technology-driven innovation.
The bio-sketch highlighted his early education in prestigious military institutions in Jos and Zaria, his academic development at the University of Ibadan, and his international exposure through studies in the United States, where he earned degrees in Business Administration, Economics, and Global Freight and Transportation Management.
It further underscored his impactful career in public service within the Texas and Missouri State Governments, before transitioning into global educational reform through the launch of the Electronic Education Initiative (EEI) in 2010. The initiative was praised for pioneering virtual academic collaborations between Nigerian and American universities, including a landmark linkage between the University of Benin and the University of Missouri.
The citation also noted his influence on Nigeria’s education sector, particularly in advancing digital learning through TETFund-supported multimedia laboratories and the introduction of innovative teaching tools such as ClassPoint and a 98-inch interactive smart board powered by EDON 3D Animation Simulation software.
Dr. Akogun’s numerous recognitions, including a National Award of Honor (Diaspora) conferred by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2024, were also highlighted as evidence of his far-reaching impact on global education and youth empowerment.
In his message delivered through his representative, Dr. Akogun expressed profound gratitude to the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, for finding him worthy of such a distinguished honour. He described the award as both humbling and motivating, reaffirming his commitment to advancing education, empowering young people, and promoting global knowledge exchange.
“This recognition strengthens my resolve to continue pushing the boundaries of innovation in education and to contribute meaningfully to human capacity development across the world,” he stated.
Organisers of the conference noted that the award reflects the institution’s dedication to celebrating individuals whose work continues to inspire transformation, leadership excellence, and sustainable development globally.
