A cult leader involved in kidnapping for ransom has been slain by troops from the 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 1, Joint Task Force, South South, also known as Operation Delta Safe.
In addition, another member, Stephen Fragene, was arrested in the Pessu community in Delta state’s Warri South local government area. According to a statement signed by Capt. Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, the suspect admitted to being a member of a notorious gang that terrorizes the area and its surroundings.
He claimed to have given reliable information about the group’s actions using deadly weapons in recent conflicts.
According to the statement, the infamous criminal who was detained was strongly linked to kidnapping for ransom, and there was proof that money had been paid to guarantee the victims’ release.
“A pump-action gun was recovered from the scene, and the neutralized suspect, simply identified as Mr. Dele, was shot dead during a firefight that ensued from a follow-up operation by the troops,” he added.
“The operation is ongoing, with troops combing the general area, to arrest other members of the gang,” the Army spokesperson stated.
“Efforts to recover the weapons in their possession are also stepped up.”
While praising the troops “for their resilience,” Brigadier MA Shonibare, Commander, 63 Brigade/Sector 1, JTF SS OPDS, urged them to continue “clamp down on all criminal elements in the area.”
Additionally, he informed the residents of Delta State and the surrounding areas that the Brigade would continue to successfully prioritize the protection of people and property while he was in charge.
