Politicians have been cautioned by Laolu Akande, a former spokesperson for former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, not to plan a coup against President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday, Akande urged people who were unhappy with Tinubu’s government to cast ballots against him.
He made this statement in response to rumors that several troops and high-ranking military officials had been detained in connection with a purported coup attempt against Tinubu.
“The military itself has stated that they are detaining senior officers, including, as we have been informed, a brigadier general and others,” Akande added in reference to the accusations surrounding the coup.
It doesn’t happen frequently, however some accounts state 16 and others say 20. People are therefore entitled to some well-informed conjecture.
However, I would like to state that if it is accurate to suggest that there was a coup attempt, we should applaud the military leadership for handling that and the military intelligence for keeping it in check.
The second thing I want to say is that anyone who disagree with our existing civilian leaders or who are against the Tinubu administration should go to the polls and fight them.
“We no longer want our political disputes to be resolved through a coup. Don’t stage a coup if you disagree with the president’s actions or believe that he is moving our nation in a path that is not in its best interests. Don’t go and advocate for a coup, call for one, or support one.
“Vote.” Go out and beat Tinubu at the polls if you are a politician. Go register to vote if you’re a Nigerian.
“This is how we should proceed. We must make it clear that we oppose military meddling in political affairs.
