On Thursday, the Federal Government rejected as untrue and deceptive rumors that were making the rounds on various media outlets that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) was no longer necessary to gain admission to Nigerian universities.
The Federal Ministry of Education’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, released a statement in which Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa called the publication “baseless and entirely fabricated,” emphasizing that the Ministry never made or approved such an announcement.
As per the Minister, JAMB continues to be the only legally recognized organization with the jurisdiction to administer entrance exams and manage admissions to all of the nation’s postsecondary educational establishments.
“Just to be clear, JAMB is still the legally mandated and statutory organization in charge of administering entrance exams and managing admissions to all Nigerian postsecondary institutions,” Dr. Alausa stated.
“The established admission procedures through JAMB are still fully functional, and any information to the contrary should be completely ignored.”
The Minister stated that the Federal Government is dedicated to preserving the integrity of the process and reiterated the Ministry’s steadfast collaboration with JAMB and other pertinent organizations to support openness, equity, and merit in Nigeria’s higher education admissions system.
Additionally, the Ministry advised parents, students, and postsecondary institutions to only use the Ministry’s and JAMB’s official channels of contact in order to obtain correct information about admissions procedures and other issues pertaining to education.
The Ministry warned bloggers, online platforms, and media outlets not to disseminate unconfirmed material since doing so could unnecessarily confuse the education sector.
“The Federal Ministry of Education affirms that the current function of JAMB, which continues to be essential and crucial in Nigeria’s tertiary education system, has not changed,” the statement continued.
The Ministry encouraged the public to get real-time updates on educational issues by visiting the Federal Ministry of Education’s and JAMB’s official websites and verified social media accounts.
