Elderstatesman Bernard Mikko of Rivers State has defended Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s decision to switch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that the choice was essential for the state’s general welfare, political protection, and self-preservation.
Mikko stated that Fubara’s defection was not surprising in an interview with ARISE NEWS on Wednesday, pointing to the PDP’s demise as a viable political platform in Rivers State and throughout the South.
Mikko clarified that in order to maintain their posts and promote government, officials in Rivers State and throughout Nigeria must frequently associate themselves with political parties.
He explained that Fubara’s choice was a sensible reaction to the PDP’s failure to uphold party discipline and safeguard its members.
Mikko stated, “The political environment requires leaders to make strategic choices.”
“Governor Fubara’s action demonstrates a practical approach to guaranteeing stability, efficient governance, and the well-being of the Rivers State populace.”
“Nigerians, no Nigerian would be surprised by Fubara’s action yesterday or the day before.”
Mikko claimed that since President Goodluck Jonathan’s term ended, the PDP was no longer as powerful as a banana leaf or a plantain leaf.
“Because the party was so weak right after President Jonathan’s term ended.
You are well aware of the governors and stakeholders that first left the 2014 convention to form the MPDP.
“I served as a special advisor to the policy monitoring, policy review, and monitoring during all of their subsequent actions. And I witnessed everything that was taking place.
“The party members behaved boldly and got away with it. You know, the party turned into a trading franchise. and a variety of stuff.
He claimed that Fubara’s decision to join the APC was motivated by a dedication to maintaining stability in Rivers State and preserving his ability to lead successfully rather than just personal ambition.
“I believe he is correct. Fubara has successfully bargained his way into a stronger platform that can provide him with the kind of protection Riversfield wants, which makes Riversfield happy. It has nothing to do with him.
Mikko said that the governor’s actions were motivated by security and intelligence considerations.
“The most crucial thing in politics is to connect yourself with your safety. As the state’s main executive, he is fully aware of this. We may be watching from the sidelines. Security reports are not read by us. He is aware of where his bread is buttered.
“He is aware of what was happening. “He is aware of what was going on,” he remarked.
