Universities in Nigeria can now offer 13 new degree programs that have been approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to prospective students.
It was stated that the Commission sent a circular to all vice-chancellors announcing the accession of the programs to the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).
According to the statement, the clearance is a part of initiatives to improve academic relevance and bring higher education into line with international standards.
The Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, signed the NUC circular, which was issued by the organization’s spokesperson.
Artificial intelligence; classical Christian education; human kinetics with an emphasis on sport management; geomatics engineering; community health science; intelligence and security studies; Islamic economics and finance; parasitology and entomology; telecommunication science; water sanitation and hygiene; cooperative economics and management; nuclear science; and nuclear engineering are among the recently approved programs.
According to the commission, in March 2025, experts from the Nigerian university system helped develop the new programs’ 70% national component. Universities are scheduled to develop the remaining 30% institutional component in accordance with the CCMAS terms.
Following a fruitful resource assessment tour, the NUC encouraged universities interested in offering any of the new programs to start implementation in the 2025–2026 academic year.
Moreover, vice-chancellors were instructed to distribute the authorized CCMAS documents to the appropriate departments, academic planning units, and faculties.
