Vandals broke a 24-inch gas pipeline in Bayelsa state’s Southern Ijaw local government area.
According to reports, the Ogboinbiri/Obiobi 24-inch gas pipeline runs between the settlements of Angiama and Angiamagbene.
Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, acknowledged the event in a statement on Friday, describing the facility’s destruction as criminal and economic sabotage.
According to him, the state administration was working with security authorities to guarantee that those responsible are arrested.
“The public should be aware that protecting national assets is a communal responsibility, and we urge all individuals to stay watchful and report any suspicious activity involving public assets to law enforcement officials.
“Public asset degradation not only causes income losses for federal, state, and municipal governments, but it also poses serious environmental risks.
“Exposure to natural gas and petrochemicals can constitute significant health challenges to citizens,” the minister stated.
Koku-Obiyai urged the state’s youth to resist the temptation to engage in disruptive actions and instead partner with the administration to maintain calm and defend public facilities.

He went on to say that by working together, they could achieve the government’s prosperity plan and improve infrastructure to attract investors.
The Commissioner challenges the adolescents to collaborate to protect the safety and security of their public assets and to prevent future instances of economic sabotage.
According to reports, pipelines in the country’s Niger Delta region have sustained a number of damages in recent days.
On March 17, a fire broke out on a stretch of the Trans-Niger Pipeline, or TNP, in Bodo village, Gokana LGA, Rivers state.
Five days later, an explosion was recorded at the Soku gas pipeline at the Soku-Elok (Abua)-Rumuji-Bonny export terminal in Rivers State.
