Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) has been reappointed by President Bola Tinubu to the position of Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for an additional five years.
The appointment was reportedly renewed in a statement released on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy.
The former military officer, who was born in Adamawa, would continue to lead the NDLEA until 2031, according to Tinubu.
The president claims that Marwa’s first term in the NDLEA has been notable for numerous drug busts, including as the apprehension of 73,000 drug mules and barons and the confiscation of more than 15 million kg of different hard substances.
Tinubu added that the NDLEA has started national initiatives to combat drug usage under Marwa’s direction.
“Your reappointment is a vote of confidence in your tireless efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse,” he declared. I implore you to keep pursuing the hard drug dealers who are seeking to ruin our people, especially the youth.
“Marwa was initially appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021, following his tenure as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to December 2020,” the statement continued.
“Marwa is a graduate of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, and a former military governor of Lagos and Borno States.
Following his commission as a second lieutenant in 1973, Marwa held the positions of academic registrar of the Nigerian Defence Academy, brigade major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, and Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to Lieutenant-General Theophilus Danjuma, Chief of Army Staff. Additionally, he held the position of Deputy Defense Advisor at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC, and then Defense Advisor at the Nigerian Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
“He has two graduate degrees: a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University (1985–86) and a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh (1983–85).”
