One day after being arrested during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja, Nnamdi Kanu’s principal attorney, Aloy Ejimakor, has confirmed that he is still being held at the Kuje Prison.
Ejimakor gave fans assurances about his safety in a post on his 𝕏 handle on Tuesday, but he also voiced concerns about how his case was being handled.
“I am still being held at Kuje jail, but I am safe and sound. Our submissions were dismissed by the magistrate. He wrote, “He got his way by insisting on keeping us on remand until Friday.”
The human rights attorney further said that the authorities purposefully selected a certain Kuje court to arraign him rather than other Abuja magistrate courts.
“For background: Remember that they went to this Magistrate court in Kuje instead of several others in town,” Ejimakor said.
Ejimakor was reportedly among those held Monday during the demonstration organized by activist Omoyele Sowore, which called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
The Presidency wants to sanction Ejimakor.
Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, has urged legal authorities to punish Ejimakor for taking part in the demonstration.
Ejimakor’s action, according to Onanuga, was against professional ethics.
One of Nnamdi Kanu’s attorneys, Aloy Ejimakor, was visible to me among the few demonstrators Omoyele Sowore had organized in Abuja. He remarked, “I wonder what Mr. Ejimakor was thinking when he chose to participate in this chaotic protest.”
He asserts that since Kanu’s treason trial is still pending, the attorney ought to have been aware of the sub judice principle.
“The prosecution has wrapped up its investigation. Kanu’s legal team now has an obligation to concentrate on mounting a compelling defense instead of participating in open protests, Onanuga continued.
After demonstrators disobeyed a court order limiting protests near important government buildings in Abuja, Ejimakor and Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the IPOB leader’s younger brother, were arrested along with other individuals. They were held until Friday after being arraigned at the Kuje Magistrate Court.
