In Abuja, the Court of Appeal acknowledged Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), but the Supreme Court overturned that decision.
In a unanimous ruling on Friday, the Supreme Court’s five-member panel reportedly ruled that the Court of Appeal lacked the authority to name Abure the LP’s national chairman after concluding that the case’s core issue was the party’s leadership.
It concluded that the matter of leadership was a party internal matter and that courts had no authority over it.
In a decision deemed meritorious, the Supreme Court granted the appeal brought by Senator Nenadi Usman and one other.

It went on to reject the cross-appeal that the Abure group of the LP had filed, stating that it was unworthy.
The Court of Appeal’s Decision
In a ruling made by Justice Hamma Barka, the Appeal Court in Abuja acknowledged Abure as the National Chairman of the LP on January 17, 2025.
Justice Barka’s order upheld a previous court decision from November 2024 that acknowledged Abure as the party’s chairman.
Due to the lower court’s lack of authority to hear the case, the finding nullified a Federal High Court in Abuja’s October 8, 2024, judgment.
Barka ruled that the lower court’s inability to hear the matter in the first place precluded the conclusion that this appeal fails or succeeds.
