The 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has come under fire from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State over remarks he made on the conviction of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
According to reports, Obi called Kanu’s arrest, incarceration, and final punishment “unfortunate,” saying that the procedure showed a lack of leadership and could actually increase rather than lessen tensions.
Obi made the comments in a statement released by his media assistant, Ibrahim Umar, titled “Kanu’s Conviction: Obi Calls for Dialogue, Healing Over Hostility.”
Lagos APC spokesman Seye Oladejo responded in a statement on Sunday, criticizing Obi’s stance and stating that it was improper for political figures to discuss issues that were still being reviewed by the courts.
Nnamdi Kanu’s transfer to Sokoto prison is opposed by IPOB.
Oladejo cautioned against making remarks that can be seen as undermining judicial or national security institutions.
He went on to say that Obi’s views might be misconstrued as politicizing a delicate security matter and advised public people to refrain from making statements that could stir up controversy.
The statement went on to say that while dealing with matters of public order and national security, it is crucial to interact in a consistent and balanced manner, emphasizing that all parties should respect court rulings while providing space for legitimate appeal and communication when needed.

The statement stated, “We urge Nigerians to view Obi’s statement within the broader context of ongoing political discourse and encouraged restraint, emphasizing the need for responsible public commentary on matters of national importance.”
