Despite what it called President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “generous consideration” for Christians in federal appointments, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) of abandoning the president.
Nigeria was purportedly added back to the list of “Countries of Particular Concern” (CPC) due to suspected genocide against Christians by former US President Donald Trump.
Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC’s founder and executive director, criticized certain Christian leaders in a statement for reportedly contacting the US government regarding religious violence in Nigeria.
“US President Donald Trump yesterday redesignated Nigeria as a country of particular concern, despite the Nigerian government’s vehement denial of Christian genocide,” Akintola stated.
The group claimed that the situation in Nigeria had been misrepresented and rejected the US decision as “misplaced and distorted.”
This redesignation is twisted, unclear, and out of place. It is a total distortion of the actual situation in Nigeria, according to MURIC.
The group claimed that Nigeria’s bad reputation abroad was caused by some Christian leaders. Instead of rectifying the “false and misleading narrative,” Akintola accused CAN of exaggerating allegations that Christians were being targeted.
Recall that certain Christian leaders wrote baseless petitions to the US Congress asserting that terrorists in Nigeria were solely killing Christians. CAN only exacerbated this rather than refuting it, he said.
MURIC expressed dissatisfaction with CAN’s response, stating that given its national influence, it expected the Christian organization to behave more responsibly.
The organization stated, “We are confused by the behavior of these Christian leaders, especially CAN, which is supposed to know better.”
Akintola went on to claim that President Tinubu had demonstrated his kindness to Christians by giving them important positions and other advantages, pointing out that more than 60% of appointments were allegedly made to Christians.
According to MURIC, “CAN’s action is a stab in the back, considering President Tinubu’s preference for Christians in appointments, favors, and privileges over and above his Muslim brethren.” The president himself attested to the fact that Christians made up 62% of all appointments. Even more giving to them than Father Christmas was the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu.
The organization accused individuals responsible for the claimed petitions to the US of being disloyal to the President and the country, calling them “the mother of all betrayals.”
“President Tinubu does not deserve this,” MURIC stated, adding that some Nigerians were accountable for providing false information to US authorities, even though the US may have its own political agendas.
