The death of Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, a member of the Nigerian Army, has been confirmed. He is accused of killing his wife and then killing himself at the Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.
A statement from Capt. Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, stated that the terrible event took place at the 221 Battalion quarters within the cantonment on October 11.
According to Nwankwo, “the soldier, who was on duty within the cantonment, requested permission from his superior to attend to some personal issues but failed to return to his post,” the preliminary investigation found.
When coworkers went to see how he was doing, he claimed, they found the soldier and his wife dead inside their apartment in Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters.
He continued, “Their remains have been preserved, and a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.”
The Army expressed its sorrow and remorse for the event and offered its sympathies to the couple’s friends, family, and coworkers.
22 Armoured Brigade Commander Brigadier General Ezra Barkins promised that the issue would be looked at in detail and that the results will be released to the public.
The Army sincerely regrets this regrettable act. In order to stop similar incidents in the future, we ask for the public’s cooperation and understanding while we carry out a thorough investigation,” he stated.
