Nigeria is getting ready to host a Boxing Gala Night and the inaugural African Boxing Congress in Lagos on Sunday, December 28, 2025.
The event is anticipated to attract representatives from over twenty national federations throughout the continent, laying the groundwork for what many in the sport believe will be a significant advancement for African boxing.
Following approval from African Boxing, the rights were obtained by the Nigeria Boxing Federation, headed by Honourable Wale Edun. Operating under World Boxing, the global organization in charge of Olympic-style boxing, African Boxing serves as the boxing authority for the continent.
Nigeria is “a strategic nation with the capacity to lead a holistic advancement of the squared ropes sports in the continent,” according to a letter from African Boxing to the NBF.
Additionally, the communication verified that Hon. Omonlei Imadu, the Vice President of the NBF, had been added to the African Boxing Working Committee. For the December congress, he will also assume leadership as Head of Organization.
Imadu conveyed his happiness at the appointment and the opportunity it offers.
“We would use every effort as a federation to make the tournament a success in December. As the organization’s leader, I am very thrilled about the possibility of holding the congress in Nigeria since it will establish the NBF and our country as a focal point for the continent’s top boxing decision-making body,” he stated.
Nigeria is well-positioned to be selected as the host of the African qualifiers for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles thanks to its successful bid. Additionally, it creates opportunities for training initiatives meant to promote Olympic-style boxing in Nigeria.
African Boxing has disclosed that its continental headquarters will be set up in Lagos as an additional expression of trust.
