According to the Nigerian government, an inquiry into password leaks impacting 183 million Google Mail users has started.
This was revealed in an interview by a senior Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) official who wished to stay nameless.
This follows the alarm raised by a recent report about a major attack that seems to have compromised up to 183 million email accounts, including Gmail.
In addition to the email accounts themselves, the passwords that are thought to be connected to those logins—including those of Nigerian users—have also been made public.
As a result, hackers may be able to access all Gmail-dependent logins in addition to email accounts.
Troy Hunt’s website, “Have I Been Pwned,” which monitors data breaches, published this updated alert.
The Independent newspaper claims that the website has monitored over 15 billion accounts and 917 compromised websites.
According to Reacting, a trustworthy NDPC source, the commission has already started looking into the impact on Nigerian Gmail and other email customers.
“We’ve started looking into the Gmail and other data breaches. He said, “We are monitoring the situation to determine the degree of the impact on Nigerian users.”
