The National Sports Commission (NSC) has given the D’Tigers, Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, a boost in spirits as they start their quest for a second continental title at the 31st FIBA Men’s AfroBasket, which begins today in Angola.
Mohammed Abdulrahman, the head coach of the D’tigers, and his team were reassured by NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko that the Federal Government was totally behind them in their attempt to rule Africa’s basketball scene.

The D’Tigress, who showed incredible resilience at the last Women’s AfroBasket, could serve as an inspiration to the players, he said.
“The D’Tigress was a great example of the Nigerian can-do attitude. We want you to enter the Men’s AfroBasket with the same unwavering attitude. We are completely certain that you will rule Africa just like your other citizens,” he continued.

The 12-man team was reminded of its track record by NSC Director General Bukola Olopade.
“You are capable of doing it without a doubt. We are confident in your ability to repeat what you have done in the past. Make the country proud, please,” he asked.
The D’Tigers have been placed in Group B with Cameroon, Madagascar, and Tunisia, the reigning champions.
On Wednesday, August 13, they take on Madagascar to start their campaign. Two days later, they face Tunisia in a heavyweight match, and on August 17, they play Cameroon in their last group match.
16 countries will compete in the August 12–24 tournament, with hosts Angola aiming for a record-tying 12th AfroBasket championship.
