Godwin Obaseki, the former governor of Edo State, has criticized Monday Okpebholo, his successor, for allegedly leaving behind an N600 billion debt.
Recall that during a press conference to commemorate Okpebholo’s first year in office, state Commissioner for Information and Strategy Kassim Afegbua stated that road contractors were due more than N178 billion.
According to Afegbua, Obaseki was giving contractors instructions to take out loans and work without making plans for payment.
However, Obaseki’s media assistant, Crusoe Osagie, quickly refuted the accusation, claiming that nations like the United States see Nigeria as dangerous and have even threatened military involvement because of these false tales.
“I believe it is now critical that we emphasize the risks associated with some of these careless remarks that they are making. We can confidently state that Nigeria is currently in danger of going extinct.
“Our government has been called reckless, disgusting, and embarrassed by the head of government of another country.
Therefore, when remarks like these start to emerge from a state like Edo, which is also run by the All Progressives Congress (APC), it validates the attitude that we are getting from other countries.
In Abuja, Nigeria, there is a Debt Management Office. No government, whether local, state, or federal, has the authority to take out loans or engage in any kind of debt arrangement without the Debt Management Office’s knowledge and consent.

At the very least, you would discover it in the DMO if Obaseki had such debt or taken out such loans.
He stated, “So he just comes out and spews lies and makes this statement, giving the impression that touts are running the state.”
