If the state government does not respond to calls for better member welfare at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) branch in Oyo state says it will launch a seven-day warning strike on October 2.
In an interview with NAN, association chairman Happy Adedapo said.
According to him, the goal of the strike is to raise awareness of the urgent problems that healthcare professionals face, such as declining benefits, poor infrastructure, and exhaustion, in an effort to get the government to take action.
Adedapo also mentioned that on September 18, the group sent the Oyo state government a 15-day ultimatum.
According to him, the association’s demands cover a wide variety of topics, such as better pay plans and prompt allowance payments.
The hiring of more medical personnel, improvements to the LAUTECH teaching hospital’s infrastructure, and improved governance frameworks are some more.
“The Oyo State Council of Elders members, the deputy governor, the deputy speaker of the house of assembly, and the commissioner of health have all been involved,” he stated.
“To no avail, we have addressed letters to the governor himself in an attempt to find long-term answers to these problems. Since a worker deserves his pay, we are not asking for too much.
“Unless the government starts the process of improving the welfare of our members at LAUTECH, we are not going back on our decision.”
Adedapo cautioned that if the government does nothing, Oyo State’s healthcare system may completely collapse.
In order to avoid an impending catastrophe in the state’s healthcare system, he pleaded with Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde and other interested parties to act immediately.
