On Friday, the Supreme Court upheld Maryam Sanda’s death sentence from lower courts and overturned President Bola Tinubu’s pardon for the housewife from Abuja.
In 2020, Sanda was given a death by hanging sentence for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, following a fight at home.
In the lead ruling, Justice Moore Adumein stated that the Court of Appeal was correct to uphold the trial court’s decision and that the prosecution had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt as needed.
According to Adumein, it was improper for the Executive to attempt to use its pardoning authority in a culpable homicide case where an appeal was still pending.
The Apex Court dismissed her appeal for lack of merit after resolving all of the points brought up in it.
In a four-to-one split ruling, the Supreme Court upheld Sanda’s death sentence from the Court of Appeal.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court’s decision to sentence her to death by hanging was upheld by the appellate court.
On the basis of mercy, President Tinubu recently lowered Sanda’s sentence to 12 years in prison.
