Xabi Alonso, the current manager of Bayer Leverkusen and a former midfielder for Real Madrid, is set to make a comeback to the Santiago Bernabéu, this time as head coach.
Real Madrid has finalized all arrangements with Alonso for a managerial position that will last until 2028, according to prominent transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Since current manager Carlo Ancelotti is slated to leave following a successful tenure, the agreement essentially brings in a new era for the team.
On Monday, Romano announced the significant development on his official X account, writing: “Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, here we go! The story is verified, and Xabi’s appointment as the new manager through 2028 is finalized.

Along with Alonso’s appointment, the club reportedly has a whole backroom staff already set up and is getting ready for him to take over at the next FIFA Club World Cup, where Real Madrid is expected to play as the Champions League winners.
“Staff sorted, contract in place, and three-year deal for Alonso with Real planning at FIFA Club World Cup,” Romano continued.
A symbol of the club’s success, Carlo Ancelotti will go with honor after leading the squad to multiple championships in his two tenures as manager. It is anticipated that the transfer to Alonso’s leadership would go smoothly.
“Ancelotti farewell soon, then Xabi era,” Romano concluded his assessment.
